Silicone vs saline implants

The silicone vs saline implants debate is a never-ending one. Many women and cosmetic surgeons believe that silicone breast implants have a more natural look and feel than saline breast implants, especially for women lacking good soft tissue coverage. This is likely to be for the reason that silicone gel has a texture that is similar in consistency to the breast tissue. Also, saline implants are more likely to show ripples and wrinkle.

On the other hand saline implants have a number of important to consider pluses over silicone implants:

  • saline implants have a lower incidence of capsular contracture
  • saline implants also have a lower rate of rupture
  • saline implant ruptures are easier to detect because when they deflate the results are almost immediate.
  • if a saline implant raptures or leaks the saline is simply absorbed into the body
  • replacing a ruptured saline implant is easier than replacing a silicone implant
  • saline implants are easier to insert and require smaller incisions because they can be filled with saline after insertion
  • saline implants' size can be altered after the surgery, for example to additionally increase the size of the implants after the skin tissue has expanded
  • So ... which implant is right for you? This will be up to you and your plastic surgeon to decide.
