Breast implant surgery
Breast implant surgery also known as breast enlargement, breast augmentation, or breast enhancement is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breasts. This plastic surgery can be performed on an outpatient (not in the hospital) basis or in a hospital. It can be done under local anesthesia (only the breast area is numbed) or under general anesthesia (put to sleep or not aware of having surgery). The surgery can last from one to several hours depending on your particular case (your condition, implant choice, incision site, implant placement, etc.). If the surgery is done in a hospital, the length of the hospital stay will vary according to the type of surgery, the development of any postoperative (after surgery) complications, and your general health. The length of the hospital stay may also depend on the type of coverage your insurance provides. Before undergoing the breast implant surgery, you must select a plastic surgeon and schedule a consultation. Your surgeon will discuss with you your expectations, type and shape of the implants, and the method of inserting and positioning of your implants. In addition to that, your doctor will discuss with you the extent of surgery, the estimated time it will take, and the choice of treatment for pain and nausea.
Speaking generally the surgeon will make an incision and create a pocket for the implant. After the implant is placed in the pocket the incision is closed. Breast implants are placed behind the mammary gland in one of four main locations. There are also four incision sites your surgeon can use when placing your breast implants. If your breasts are sagging your doctor may also discuss with you possible need for a breast lift surgery in conjunction with breast enlargement.
