Breast implant shapes
The available breast implant shapes are:
- round: The round breast implants are ... round shaped as their name suggests. The round implant shape is the most popular and best tested shape in the US and is generally suitable for the vast majority of patients. Round implants can rotate and move within the breast pocket after the surgery without causing any any distortion in the shape of the breast or other problems. Also, they are softer and move more like a normal breast.
- anatomical/contoured/tear-shaped: The anatomical implants are shaped to have more volume at the bottom and thus look more bottom-heavy. The problem with the anatomical shape is that any rotation of the implant within its pocket will cause the breast to look very unnatural. For this reason the contoured implants must be textured so they will adhere to the breast tissue, and not rotate in the body. Additionally, they require a very precise pocket to be formed so that there is no rotation. Contoured implants were originally developed for women undergoing reconstruction surgery after mastectomy but they have become popular in general breast augmentation - some women prefer the shape of anatomical implants than round ones.
There are additional pros and cons for each shape of implant that you should discuss with your surgeon. For example, some argue that contoured implants produce a more natural look though some point out that when a round implant is held vertically it takes the same shape as the contoured models.
